Shrinking Fibroids

7
Contrary to popular belief, shrinking fibroids down to practically complete disappearance is not at all impossible. This has been demonstrated by many patients who have consequently tried natural healing methods. Although alternative medicine does not always work, it is nevertheless often a promising path to try if classic methods fail or are too risky/connected with complications.

Fibroids are abnormal growths of tissue that are to be found on the walls of the uterus. Their emergence is yet unknown to doctors and scientists, but there are certain aspects that suggest the cause could be hereditary. Although they are tumors, they are not cancerous and in most cases women who have it don’t even realize their existence due to lack of symptoms. For those who experience painful or disturbing symptoms but do not wish to undergo a surgical procedure, there are several methods to help shrink the fibroids.

Who should try shrinking fibroids?

Doctors may suggest trying to shrink fibroids for several reasons. One would be an upcoming surgical intervention. A smaller fibroid often requires a smaller incision or a less intrusive surgery. The recovery is thus more rapid and more efficient, reducing the risks of infections and complications.

Large fibroids may apply pressure on other organs, causing serious inconveniences. Women may feel the need to urinate more frequently if the fibroid presses on the bladder, or they may feel constipated if it presses on the bowel. In this case a reduction in size is desirable, as it significantly improves the well-being of the patient.

What one mustn’t forget is that for women close to menopause, a surgical intervention may be unnecessary as fibroids tend to shrink naturally at this age.

What are the methods used to shrink fibroids?

Embolization is a relatively new surgical procedure of shrinking fibroids and it has proven to shrink fibroids up to half their initial size. Tiny particles of plastic are injected through a catheter, which block the blood vessels irrigating the fibroid. The surgery is done through a very small incision and recovery usually takes up to a week.

Special drugs can help shrink fibroids as well. One of the best known medicine is GnRH Agonists, a drug that shuts down estrogen production. Estrogen is the main reason for fibroid growth, and lack of it causes fibroid starvation, leading to shrinking. What these agonists actually do, is they mimic the process that naturally occurs during menopause. Thus, several side effects similar to those of menopause may occur. Women may experience hot flashes episodes – when they feel very warm in the upper body and they blush, perspire or feel their pulse racing – followed by cold flashes episodes.

Doctors may prescribe synthetic hormones such as progesterone or androgens in order to reduce heavy bleeding caused by fibroids. These hormones, however, do not help shrink fibroids. They may be prescribed together with GnRH Agonists, as they reduce the agonists’ side effects. Thus women can follow a GnRH Agonists treatment for a longer period of time.

Opinions are split, as some consider it better to use a treatment based on plants and herbs, a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle; others suggest medical treatment, such as embolization. As always, the truth is to be found somewhere in between and, of course, treatment differs from one person to. However, no one should prescribe their own medication. It is highly important to discuss the matter with a specialized doctor.

The conventional treatment in this case is usually surgery. Hysterectomy or myomectomy can guarantee a fibroid-free uterus, but then, they are expensive and recovery can last very long. More and more women have begun to take into consideration alternative methods that, even though do not eliminate fibroids, are sure to shrink them up to half their size.

What are the benefits of shrinking fibroids naturally?

First of all, no surgery means no incision, no anaesthesia and no hospitalization. A surgery can be pretty expensive and in this case it is often unnecessary, as fibroids do not pose a threat. Shrinking fibroids naturally is a cheaper way of relieving yourself of all the inconveniences produced by such a tumour.

A smaller fibroid is not as upsetting as a bigger one. In numerous cases women can palpate their belly and feel the fibroids, this is how big they can get. They can be really difficult to live with, especially if they affect the woman’s life. They can press on the bladder or on the bowels, causing serious discomfort.

What is more, using natural remedies guarantees the patient more advantages than prescription drugs. While drugs often have unwanted side effects and can lead to osteoporosis (as in the case of GnRH Agnostics), plants and herbs combined with a healthy lifestyle bring about added benefits.

Which are the best solutions to shrink fibroids naturally?

A healthy lifestyle including exercising moderately, drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water daily and eating organic food help to shrink fibroids as they reduce excess toxins from the body. Organic food is food that does not contain pesticides or other chemicals that are harmful for the organism. A reduced amount of toxins lowers the estrogen level from the body, which helps diminish the size of fibroids.

Several herbs such as chaste-berry, milk thistle, burdock root or goldenseal are known for their ability to dissolve fibrous tissue and shrink fibroids. Chasteberry helps to balance hormones and reduces inflammations, as well as excess estrogen levels. Burdock root contains a natural tumour inhibitor and also has anti-inflammatory properties.

Following a balanced diet is another important aspect when trying to shrink fibroids. When considering such a diet, pay attention to food that focuses on reducing the amount of estrogen in the body. Among these count brown rice, whole cornmeal, oat, rice, rye, millet, buckwheat, chickweed, fresh foods and vegetables, nuts, seeds, essential oils, and the list can go on. Try avoiding food that is high in saturated fat and sugar, such as red meat or dairy products.

Fibroids, although a non-threatening tumour, are never a welcome guest. Nevertheless, they are very common among women (especially those between 30 and 50) but they often do not realize their existence because usually fibroids do not have any symptoms. Natural ways to shrink fibroids are a plus when trying to get rid of all the discomfort they can cause. When surgery is a must, however, plants and herbs can help undergo a less intrusive procedure which guarantees faster recovery.

Women may or may not know that they have fibroids until they experience symptoms, or until they are already in their menopause period. But there are still several factors which typically affects the likelihood of the occurence of fibroids in women and these include:

Age - There are cases when fibroids occur right after puberty, though it's very rare. But for most cases, women of ages 30 or 40 have or will have fibroids.

Diet - What you eat will definitely affect your health. This is why people tend to be very strict with it and even consult nutritionists. Studies have shown that high consumption of red meat and obviously alcoholic beverages will increase the likelihood of developing uterine fibroids.

Ethnicity - While this may sound unlikely, reports have shown that black women are more prone to having fibroids, even at an early age, than caucasians. To add to this demise, the latter also tends to develop larger fibroids than the former.

Genetics - As straightforward as this may be, it can actually be expected since that's just the way our body's wired. We will ultimately get complications passed onto us from our parents, and developing fibroids in women is no different.

Hormonal Changes - Since hormones are there to affect something in our body, it can be expected that they will ultimately affect the fibroids that are present in the body. Most common during puberty and pregnancy, where hormones tends to vary and change, fibroids can either shrink in size or become enlarged. This is why consulting a doctor is always a good idea when you're pregnant, not only as a precaution but also for prevention.

While there may always be a cure for Uterine Fibroids, it is always better if you get to prevent its occurrence in the first place. Not only that  you'll save much needed money, you will also save time and effort in dealing with it.

i've recently consulted the help of a medical doctor and she diagnosed me having uterine fibroid. though she said it was minimal, still there are plenty. she did said it will eventually shrink but she wasn't able to give a definite answer, which was weird i know.

have any of you hear experienced the same thing? how long would i have to wait to shrink fibroids?

p.s. i'm also already in my late 40s meaning i'm close to my menopause stage, if that helps or even matters about fibroids..

i recently met a friend who's obsessed with reading medical blogs ( since she's a nurse so go figure ), and she warned me with this question of mine, that people who are overweight are more prone to fibroids than those who aren't.

are there any truths to this? if she were a doctor i would've believed her on the spot, but also it wouldn't hurt to get further approval from other's opinion..
